Part 1: Big Ash Platter

I scored a very large piece of ash from a guy who runs a portable saw mill. This piece measures out at 23” across and almost 48” high and is 3” thick. There are a couple of checks in the piece and by working around them I will get one 20” diameter platter and four 9 1/2” platters. Went to the bandsaw and cut out the five platter blanks. Part 2: Day 2 - got a lot done!

Got an early start on the big platter project today. I use a power carver, angle grinder, dremel tool and assorted shop made sanders to work on the foot detail. I have a Trent Bosch carving post that mounts directly to my faceplate and this makes working on the back of the platter much easier – the platter stays attached to the facelplate until I am ready to put it back on the lathe.
