My daughter is an avid reader and still prefers reading from a real book even though I think most 24 year olds are downloading books these days.

Since books were stacking up on the floor, she asked me to build a second bookcase. The only space available was beneath two double hung windows. This meant the bookcase would need to be much more horizontal than vertical. She also liked the idea of something that she could also use as a bench.

Here is what I came up with in SketchUp…

After thinking on this for a while, I decided to add a subtle curve to the top rail…

Due to the horizontal format of this design and the fact that it needed to also serve as a bench, I decided to make a cardboard mock-up of the design. Never done this before…

From this, I could verify with my wife and daughter the available storage space and how the design relates to both seating height as well as placement in front of the window since the seat back can’t be too tall either. Tough design to work out.

I’ll start posting photos of the construction process next.

Thanks for looking…

Nice design. Looking forward to seeing the remainder of this project as it progresses.

Thanks Ed. I was listening to a FWW Shop Talk Live podcast episode today where Mike Pekovich was talking about the benefits of full size mock-ups. Maybe not as elaborate as the one I made.

That mock-up looks like the real thing. Just give it a nice stain and make some cardboard books and no one will know the difference . . . until they decide to sit on it!

All kidding aside, this looks great so far. Your daughter should be well satisfied.
