So, like many of you, I am at that point where I need that ‘dedicated’ table saw bench/router bench/workspace station. I’ve done plenty of looking around here on LJs as well as the internet. The biggest problem I’m coming across, as you can see from the photos, is the space limitations. My garage is 19’x12’. A while back I built a bench spanning 16’ long and 2’ wide – this was a necessity for tool storage and some work space. I built the workbench in 4’ segments, and so because I didn’t want this new piece I’m building to be just under 4’, I had to knock out one of the legs and move it closer to the dropped in miter space on my workbench (if you’re looking at the pics, I currently have the router sitting in the miter slot – the last two pics will be where I am putting this new station). So, that now leaves me with a space of 60” long x 36” high x 30” deep. Not the best, but it’s definitely better than what I’m working with right now. So, with space to roll it in and out, I’m going to build it 57”x 35”x 29”. I’m also currently working on a version in google sketch-up – which I in no way claim to be an expert at – just to give me a better idea of drawer and cabinet placements, and other little things like, can I store my planer somewhere in there? All those things that I’m terrible at visualizing ‘during’ the building process. The first photo I’ve included is the start of my sketch-up idea. As you can see, I’m going to have the router cabinet drawers and doors facing a different direction than the front of the workstation, I think it will allow me better ‘space’ in the drawers and cabinets – what I’m saying is, they will be wider and not as deep, so I’m not constantly pushing things to the back, and having to really get in there to get them out. I’ve also included a few other pics of my shop, to give you an idea of how badly I need this place to be organized. The biggest reason that I need this station stored under my workbench, is because my wife REALLY wants the car parked in the garage during winter, which is understandable since our truck doesn’t seal properly and it leaks water, haha. I suppose I could fix that, but that takes away from my time doing this, right? haha. So, thanks for viewing, I post more when I get some done!
