I am a 71 year old retired chemist-building contractor, that has a great wood working shop and I love to build furniture for a hobby. I use red oak when possible and strive for perfection even if I never seem to achieve it. I learn something new every day, mostly from people like you guys.

I have built 4 drop shelves for guns so far and they work great. I use magnet latches made for childproofing cabinets. The gas strut keeps it locked in place after using the magnet key until you squeeze the top and bottom together and then the spring will release it. The only problem I have is the gas strut is 80N and I need about a 40N so it won’t be so hard to push. So far I have been unable to find that low of one for sale. They are gas struts made for cabinets. I had a couple of 150N struts that were about wore out so they worked great. The new 80N ones are too strong. Hope this helps.
