Part 1: Getting started

09-21-2013 02:14 PM by Chris McDowell | 5 comments »

In progress: We inherited my father-in-law’s mother’s organ when she passed away. It has been in our extra room, but now that we have a second kid, it had to go. It didn’t work and we didn’t feel right trashing it, so I gutted it and decided to make stuff with the wood. The first thing I am making is a coat rack for my father-in-law’s office out of the legs. It was my wife’s idea and I thought it would be pretty cool and challenging. Since i...

Part 2: Base prep, Modifying Organ legs

09-28-2013 05:28 PM by Chris McDowell | 2 comments »

I just posted part 2 of this series on YouTube. Click here to view it. In this episode, I clean up the base after letting the glue dry overnight, then I cut a hole in the top to accept the organ leg post and I modify the organ leg post to make it ready to install into the base. Here is part 4 of the video series: In this one, I trace the template and cut the tenons on the legs that will attach to the coat rack base. I still haven’t done anything for the top of the coat rack, as far as hooks go. I know what I will do for it, i think, but being that I already have no woodworking budget, it may have to wait a little while.

Part 5: Cutting out legs, flush trimming them

10-19-2013 01:48 PM by Chris McDowell | 2 comments »

Part 5 of the coat rack build: In this video, I finish up cutting the legs out that I had traced from the template last video, then I use a router table for the first time ever and flush trim all of the legs to the template.

Part 7: Stain and Finish

11-23-2013 06:02 PM by Chris McDowell | 2 comments »

Watch the video here: In this episode, I stain and finish the base and talk a little how I’m not so sure that I made the best decision with stain.
