Making Waves in Wood

I started my next project which is to be a gift for a friend that recently had a baby. They are into sailing so I wanted to make something that represented the water.

I had some lyptus in my wood rack that I enjoy using – density of oak with color of cherry – with cool curly grain. I decided to use a stringing technique I saw on LumberJocks to make “waves”. One of the pieces I had had some sap wood that when I was evaluating made me think of the sky. So I decided it would be a nice change to include sap wood instead of hiding it.
