Sunday I went to Woodcraft and used my Christmas gift cards and purchased the Rikon low speed grinder and the Wolverine Jig with the Vari Grind attachment. I have been trying to turn on my Shopsmith for many years with the tools that came with it and using the books that came with it. I was never happy with the projects I made, well the pens I made turned out good and I have managed to sell quite a few. I was trying to sharpen my tools with the disc sander and a belt sander with poor results. Last year I made several small bowls and loved it. So I decided to save up and get the new sharpening set up. I plan to find a few better turning tools.

I’ve been turning on a Shopsmith for a few years now and from the sounds of it was having about the same results. I’ve got almost the same set up now except I have a Porter Cable grinder. It made all the difference for me. The sharp tools really made the shaving fly and now I’ve been able to turn out some small bowls and a few ornaments that came out pretty nice. My one take away from the shopsmith is that it does most thing pretty well but doesn’t seem to do anything great.
