The chest looks great. I'm going to be making one soon and will be adding the top trim piece like you did. It really dresses up the top as opposed to leaving it just plain 3/4" stock.
A few questions if you don't mind:
When the lid is attached to the top trim piece that is in turn attached to the chest, are there any stability issues with the lid? What I mean is, is the lid just as "solid feeling" as if it were attached directly to the chest itself?
Does the top trim piece feel secure to the chest? Is it glued and screwed?
Also, regarding the lid support, do you have one on each side of the lid? If not, does it feel lopsided when closing it?
Are the hinges sitting on top of the top trim piece or are they mortised in? If they sit on top of the top trim piece, is there a slight gap between the lid and the chest when the lid is closed?
Are the hinges spring assisted or just regular hinges?
