straight knife vs spiral cutter head on a jointer - 15 replies

Is it worth the extra $ to get a spiral cutter head on a jointer? I am looking at the Grizzly 0656 ($1095) and the 0656X ($1710). Is it really a pain in the rear to set straight knives even on a quality machine? Is the difference in the finish significant?

drying time for oil based stain - 4 replies

The can of GF warm cherry stain states a ideal drying conditions are 70F and 70% RH. If the temp is 86F and the RH is 37% is the drying time increased or decreased?

staining wood filler - 3 replies

will oil based stain “take” over water based wood filler? If not can I use some shellac on the filler prior to applying stain? If not shellac what can I apply on the filler which will allow the stain to “take”?

May I please get y’alls opinion on mortising machines? I’ve never owned/used one and I want to learn how to make m/t joints. I am considering the Rikon 34-260, Rikon 34-255 Jet JBM-5, and the Craftsman 21907. Is there a way of making QUALITY m/t joints without using a mortising machine?

Can I get a recommendation on a QUALITY 5/8” Jacobs Chuck? I have a PC drill press (Lowe’s) and the chuck runs out noticeably. The spindle barely wobbles but once I install the chuck it is a whole different animal.

Craftsman bench top oscillating spindle sander - 1 reply

Does anyone have experience with the craftsman # 315.215700 oscillating spindle sander? There are several of these listed on ebay and I’m thinking of buying one. The beauty of this one is it has a 2.5” OD dust port. Most of the bench top models in this class of machine have a 1.5” or some other odd ball size dust port.
