no previous part Part 1 of Woodshop 2.0 - series no next part

So much has happened in the past 6 years. I sold off woodworking shop 1.0 machines and tools. The darthford was T boned and totaled by a knuckhead. Hip replacement and spine surgery that was a two year thing.

Now I’m BACK driving a DarthRam Rebel and decided to get back into woodworking this weekend! The only thing left from shop 1.0 are my 6 inch calipers and Starrett squares so I’m starting from scratch.

INBOUND!

- Powermatic 15HH planer
- Grizzly 12” 5hp GO696X table saw. Yes the same BEAST I purchased for shop 1.0
- ShopFox 3hp W1869 cyclone dust collector a bit step up from my previous collector.
- Sawstop 4 post router lift
- Sawstop 24×32 cast iron router table w/mobile stand
- Sawstop router table fence
- Sawstop brass precision router guide set
- Portamate 3.25hp router motor
- Jessem clear cut precision stock guides
- WR550 remote planer readout

I remember Shop #1 and that first Grizzly G0696X. I think you were making some guitar amp cabinets with custom PCB IIRC? You had a few issues with that saw as the table top wasn’t completely flat. You still making them? Still at “Borg” corporate up in Washington? What happened to shop #1? Why the big sell off? That was a kick ass shop and saw! Glad to see you are back at it regardless

Coincidentally, I’ve been back at it too after a long hiatus. I’ve been trying my damnedest to get a new saw but most every manufacture is out of stock on anything decent or not 3 phase. Just sold my old contractor saw and have been waiting on a new Delta Unisaw 36-L552. It was supposed to be here on the 19th but on the 18th I received an update saying it would be delayed to March 5th. I’m not believing that date now. If I could find a G0696X in stock on Grizzly’s site, I’d so jump on that and cancel the unisaw!

No the Grizzly GO696X was awesome, it was the Powermatic PM2000 that had the bowed top and many other issues.

I stopped making amps for many years but got back into it this past year. I took that to a whole new level and now I need to make some wood cabinets for them.

Yep still a corporate Borg here in Washington. OMG the sell off, decided I wanted to switch from woodworking to metalworking that’s a whole story. Then hip/spine issues took me out for like 2 years and I sold off all the metalworking equipment.

I’m finding everyone is out of stock of pretty much everything. Grizzly contacted me today, they have a shipment coming in on April 5th with the G0696X. I have already purchased and locked in my spot in line. Honestly there’s no other table saw I would consider after owning one in the 10-12 inch class.

Oh that’s right! I forgot about the Powermatic. I do remember that G0696X looked like a beast! So did your PCB boards. I’m also play guitar and love tube amps. I’d be curious to see what you have going on. Are yours American voiced 6V6/6L6 based or more of a British tone with EL34s? I probably have more amps than I really need but…. well you know how it goes. Never enough tone.

I can understand the sell off. Metal working is very enticing. I worked in a metal fab shop for a couple years after I got out of the Air Force back in the early 90s. CNC machines, high precision stuff. I really loved it but the money wasn’t what I wanted so switched to my other love, computers and still doing Engineering work today (with MS products too ;) )

I saw the 696 was backorder. April 5th seems so far away when I don’t have a saw now but…. hmmmm. To Unisaw or not to Unisaw, that is the question.. Too bad I already bought some throat plate inserts for it. Might be hard to sell them off if I go with a Grizzly. Oh well.

Welcome back and may your saw dust pile be filled with the finest of dust from your new equipment!

@Clafollett this is the Dumble #183 style amp I need to build a wood cabinet for. I’m thinking white Ash at the moment. 100 watts, 304 stainless steel chassis, .062 inch thick black anodized CNC milled and engraved front/rear faceplates.

6-8 weeks wait on the Grizzly table saw but a number of other items are also on backorder so it kind of doesn’t matter. I’ll be busy cleaning and dialing in the stuff that arrives over the next month plus. Actually, better that it arrives staggered than all at once.

{insert image of me drooling the Homer Simpson doughnut drool}

Ok, sign me up but in a 20W! My house would crumble from the Dumble at even 3 on the dial!

I bet that thing JAMS! Good choice in wood. Built like a tank, it will be!

Yeah, you have a ton of equipment to setup. I expect power tool porn to follow!

She has a master volume to keep that under control and yes 100 watt transformers are pretty large. She’s also sporting a full compliment of vintage 1960’s Mullard Blackburn UK tubes.

I’m going to visit our local hardwoods suppliers next Saturday to see if I can source some white Ash. My second choice is Mahogany which I know I can get in wide widths.

If I could find some half rotted wormy swamp Ash man that would be perfect.

One thing that’s great, I still have my panel of umpteen 110v 20amp, 220v 20amp, and 30amp outlets. I had considered ripping that out glad I didnt.

Oh nice! A master volume makes life much better but 100W is still a beast! I have a Marshall Astoria Custom with a pair of Gold Lion KT66s. I still haven’t heard full 30Ws. So damned loud! It was a 5W switch which makes thing way better when cranked.

Nice find on the Mullards. Old stock is getting so hard to find. Swamp ash would sound killer. I still kick myself for not buying a bare bones swamp ash Les Paul years ago. It sounded so fat and juicy.

Yeah, good call on not gutting the power feeds. Must have been some dark days if you were pondering that!

Cant wait to see the cabinet you make for it!

What the…okay we have entered Paranormal Activity territory. Do you remember writing this,

”We must be twins separated at birth or something. I was thinking to myself, “It may have been a coincidence we are both Software Engineers. Quite a stretch we’ve both worked machine shops but there is no way in hell he was in the Air Force” WOW!!! I’m speechless. How many others could say the same? I bet I have better odds winning the lottery! lol”

Wait for it…here’s my Astoria Custom LMAO!

Wow the local Rockler had some stuff in stock, I ran across town and picked up the following plus some 4 inch dust collector hose and fittings.

- Incra Miter 5000 Sled
- Leigh 16’’ RTJ400 Router Table Dovetail Jig

The failure report – Drove 280 miles Saturday to pick up a SawStop CAST IRON router table top at Woodcraft. I told them 3 times CAST IRON. Instead they loaded a phenolic into my truck, and they don’t have the cast iron in stock. Now I’m faced with spending $100 in travel to return a $300 item, the local Woodcraft won’t accept the return. Oh yeah Woodcraft is in the dog house with me.

Very weird, do you know how rare those Astoria Customs are, they are unobtanium, yet we both own one.
