Wood identification help - 6 replies

I picked up a few pieces of wood today, simply because I liked them and the price seemed good. I would probably have bought more if they were available! But, I don’t know what they are. Any help? The second one in on the left may be luan, the seller thought. I wasn’t interested in this piece but he threw it in.

Pencil marking gauge, or...? - 14 replies

I only have one marking gauge (a wheeled gauge), and I’m sure a few more would prove wonderfully handy. In addition to scribing/slicing I often need to make a pencil line. In something like oak, especially from a distance, seeing the scribed line is very difficult. And depending on what I’m doing, I need the pencil line more than the...

How should I cut a leg vise to shape? - 7 replies

I’m building a Benchcrafted-ish workbench and am now thinking about the leg vise. I’ve got a nice big piece of hard maple for it, just over 2.5” thick. I’m wondering how to cut it to shape. I like Benchcrafted’s design with the curve as it gets towards the top, but I don’t know how to cut that curve. I donR...

Torn on a drill press choice - 9 replies

For years I’ve wanted to get a drill press, but I could never justify small benchtop ones. Large benchtop ones solve the working distance issues, but the 3+” quill travel seems a significant limitation that I’d hit quickly and regularly. I really want a floor stander with 4+” travel. I just make-do by using some squares t...

I have opportunity to take down a black walnut tree, but don't know what I'm doing. - 16 replies

My wife has a friend with two walnut trees in their yard that they want gone. We heat part of the house with wood, so my wife spoke up to say we’d take it. Great! Free firewood! We mostly burn (and cut and split) oak and some maple, so coming in to some walnut is sort of special. A year or more ago, I would have taken the wood to burn and ...

Edge glue-up for a table top and straightness of edges - 7 replies

For my first-ever attempt at fine woodworking I’m building a little table. I’m working on the top and am going to laminate five pieces together to create it. I’ve set the pieces together to check fit of the edges. None of them perfectly mate. I didn’t really expect them to be perfectly matched because (at this point) I ha...

Bar gauge opinions - 4 replies

I’m just getting into woodworking again—last done as a kid in high school and at home, 20+ years ago—and am learning and recognizing a lot especially as I focus on hand tools. The idea of measuring without numbers through the use of various types of gauges is very appealing to me. Based on the variety of wheel marking gauges, p...
