I am one of the original computer hackers (a good guy/white hat). Been doing that for 35 years. A few months ago I stumbled on this site and decided I would like to try woodworking. I attended a few classes at Woodcraft and that is about all the experience I have (aside from a Tomahawk and a Pencil holder I made at day camp when I was 10).

I bought some used equipment from a cabinet maker who had to get rid of his extra stuff fast (landlord needed the space). On impulse, I bought this Drill Press. According to him, it cost $900. I would guess that is an exaggeration but since I know nothing about drill presses, I guessed that just by the “heft” of it, it had to be worth the $150 I paid. It is a Dayton Model 5Z146E 17” Drill Press. I cannot find any information on it online. From what I did read, I believe that it was sold under many labels.

I would be very happy if I could find a manual. In the mean time I have a question. It appears that a part is missing. When I turn the handle (three bars, supposed to lower the bit), it just spins. I think a small part connects it to the drill. Does anyone know what is supposed to be there (please see photo). Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Craig
