« Part 1: The starting error Part 2 of Getting serious about dovetails series Part 3: Is third time the charm? »

Well I made all the boards the same thickness and proceeded with layout. I was determined to identify the faces and letter the joining pieces to avoid making any mistakes. I woke up at 3:00 AM and after laying awake for an hour decided to hit the shop at 4:00 AM. There is a positive to having a shop in an outbuilding separate from the house. Started marking the pin board and ended up with the tail board being face in, argh. Because I am into using knife walls (channeling Paul Sellers) I had already made a continuous knife wall cut on what was supposed to be the unseen inside corner. I flipped it and remarked the pin board creating something like a damn road map on the end of the stock. I once again took the dovetail saw to task. With that done time to very carefully remove the waste.

The light is being kind and not showing a few gaps but overall I am pleased with the results with one exception. In cleaning up all the pencil marks as I pulled the LA jack plane back the blade pulled some grain loose. I should have stopped and inserted some glue to rejoin the crack but kept going only to destroy the fragment. Lesson learned and plan on getting super glue for next screw up. I will attempt to do a repair but haven’t decided if I should wait till after glue up. Time to start with the next joint so I can see what happens next.

Serious progress! Well on the road to not thinking twice about ripping out a DT for a project.

I can’t count the times I’ve had a chip-out and spent quality time on the floor trying to locate the piece.

I may not be a dovetail champ but my workflow and speed are improving. Anxiety level is lower too. I think the splinter got sliced and diced in the plane but I did look for it.

Have your say...
