Project Information

I have been making band saw boxes for just over a month now and I started out copying everyone elses designs. Well, I think I have decided to go with the DR. Seuss theme for my boxes. Or, a furniture design. I think that I am addicted to these little guys. The green one is a Buckeye burl cast in bright green alumilite resin. The other is a maple burl cast with a purple gunmetal alumilite resin. The dresser styled one is also maple burl cast with a sky blue alumilite resin. The solid wood is Madrone burl with a hand rubbed tung oil finish. I hope you enjoy looking at these as much as I love making them.

Awesome work. Love it. You need to Blog how you do the resin… I'm curious. Really like the pop!

Wow, that certainly caught my attention. The colors are a nice accompaniment to the whimsical designs. Also, cast my vote with RPhillips.

Those are really neat looking pieces. I've never seen anyone use that much resin on a piece before. Would you be able to give and idea of size and how much resin was needed for each.

I really like the green one and the one with the blue streak across the front.

Wayne

You did a great job.

Where do you get this stuff and how do you do the mixing and applying.

Excellent work - they serve as functional boxes and pieces of art. Where can I learn more about Alumilite?

Thanks for posting.

The resin is cool (old man lingo) - but your design artistry is great. I'm continually in awe of the many 'wood artist' on this sight.

Those are neat boxes.
Leave it a fellow Texan to come up with something so unique (grin)...

Well, everyone let me say this. Thank you for the warm welcome and all the nice comments. I have been casting wood and other stuff with the alumilite and I love the stuff. It sands, cuts, drill, carves and polishes up just like wood. I will blog about the technique and process later so stay tuned. I have also started a larger 10" tall box so stay tuned.

I cast the wood in a silicone mold that I make myself. The resin you can buy from alumilite.com but it is pricey. Other people cast with cheaper resins but it just shrinks too much (away from the wood). There are also a couple YouTube videos on it as well

Very nice! Really like the color 'pop', really pairs well with the whimsical shapes.

I have yet to make a bandsaw box myself but have been studying them here on LJ. Did you hand sand the fronts to give them the rounded edges or did you use something like a sanding mop?
