Project Information

Last week my old oak mallet finally gave up on me so it was time for an upgrade..

I used mostly hand tools except for cutting out the rough outline of the handle.

This mallet is made from hard maple and jatoba with a couple 1 1/2" holes in the center laminate filled with BB's. Finish is 3-2-1 and paste wax. Total weight is 34oz! My chisels are shaking in their holders right now…

Eric, love the contrast and design. I'm wondering what is the primary use for this style of mallet? I would like to turn one for doing small dovetail and mortise work and have huge paws, how do you go about determining how tall what angle to cut the face,......Thanks Pat

Thanks for all the kind comments!

Don - That means a lot coming from you. I don't ever really plan anything out it just kinda happens that way. I am probably just subconsciously trying to irritate the tar out of Brandon :-D

Pat - I'll probably end up using this for whatever needs to be beat on. It should do mortises very nicely but I am considering making a Jr version for smaller detailed work. I mean at 2.2lbs this guy does all the work for me I just have to move it around a little. As for the head angle have a look at this blog post by Swirt it explains the string trick and how to determine the head angle for your mallet.

Shane - It weighs more than my mini sledge lol.

Mauricio - I had every intention of doing those leather inserts on the ovals all the way up till I finished shaping the handle and it felt so comfortable in my hand I decided to leave well enough alone and canx the leather idea. Basically I chickened out lol.

Eric, thanks for the link I read thru it and I'm not sure how it relates to a turned mallet. The angles shown even with the short mallet look like they would be too steep. Look forward to the Jr edition. I'm sure it will be just as nice as this one if not even better. Pat
