Project Information

I must be getting brave (or crazy) because this is the first screen door I've EVER made that was not a custom order. I guess it would be called a "Mass Market" door. I've had it out in front of my house for the holiday weekend and I got quite a lot of interest…including one store that would like to display it for me. I'm just not sure how that all works. I have my own sales tax number if he sells it, he collects the sales tax, and I do what? I'm so confused! Although he has the best store front in town so I think it could really boost recognition of North Country Rustics. We're nearing 50 facebook fans and we're starting to get fans who are not friends or family….

I've got to figure out a better system for my oval cuts and router…I'm still not happy with how they turned out. Good news though, I used my new band saw to create the double set of leaves and the top of the door…still have all my fingers!!!

Very nice job! I'm basing this on Florida, not NY, but generally only the final user pays sales tax, so your sale to the store would not be taxable. And you shouldn't have to pay sales tax on the materials that went into the door either.

Check your PMs. I think I can help with your grooving.
In AZ, only the end user pays sales tax so, only the final seller remits the tax to the state/city/county.
Ask an accountant in your state.

if i may suggest something to you Robbin, if your going to make the same type of cuts often, then you would do well to make a pattern and use it when making the cuts, use a router bit with a bearing on top, it follows your pattern exactly…so yea you have to have your patterns spot on, but after you make the one…it will be so easy doing the rest of them…as far as the tax goes, im not into that part…good luck with that…grizz

Thanks Gene! I'm sure the accounting dept (my mom~she's done accounting for over 20 years) can figure it out but I was not blessed with her skills instead I got my dad's skills for liking tools….

oh P.S….i was going to tell you , for anything your going to replicate in your doors…make a pattern..use mdf , its the best…more stable, or birch plywood…i wouldn't use particle board…any moisture gets on it or near it and it swells or just falls apart…not good stuff..well you might already know this stuff, but am just trying to give you some suggestions…i really hope your business takes off…grizz

Nice door and I think it is a nice choice for a non custom order door since it should appeal to quite a few people. I agree with the pattern idea if you're going to mass-produce something, but you might want to stick with plywood, because the weight of a piece of MDF the size of that door might be more than you want to handle often. That would be great if you could get a store to show it and it will probably get you more custom orders too.

Dale ~ You're always thinking! MDF might be a bit too heavy for a girl to move around several times a day all by herself. I'm trying to get the community to know I'm here…but for a small town news doesn't seem to be traveling very fast. Facebook is starting to catch on but…I'd like "real" people too. :)
