Project Information

When posting this, the site lecturing about wood-only, blah, blah, has put me in a bad mood, so I'll be brief. For the purists, stop here! because there's metal in this plane (facepalm). This was a fun project, inspired by Div, fuel-to-fire added by Mads. Iron is off an old Stanley, 37.5 bed angle, 25 primary. Wood maple from stockmaker and walnut from fire log. Make one!

Thanks Glen! I'm going to start doing things like this wege more often. It took all of 5 minutes and people are getting a kick out of it. I've only owned the plane for a day, but I bet the fishie wedge will make me smile every time I pick it up:)

Soda, it's too late to edit, else I would take your advice! Or maybe Div inspired wooden device with noncontributory metal component.

All my favorite friends are here and like Mads is famous for, I'm smiling. In retrospect, I kind of like the big clunky dowels. I tried it out on some hemlock and the blade was not entirely up to the challenge. Like Wayne said, "weird". I might tinker with the primary but my NEXT plane will be of a higher pitch, I do believe. I've got a birthday coming up in the next few days, and I spot heavy, small packages under the tree. My fiance' won't wander far from LN and the like, so no vintage Stanleys; BUT what if there's a 62 knock off in there? Wishing, waiting, fishing, baiting…..Thanks guys!

Div and friends, I have to share this with you. I have a "honey-do" board in my shop. I get little gentle reminders on it, i.e., "turn off the lights", "remember to wear pants", etc. Here is summarized my very complex algorithm, reduced to flowchart form, Div v. Mads!

Is it weird to see your names scrawled on the walls of a tiny shop in the woods of West Virginia? Cue banjo music…...

Ha! Napoleon, I've never accused my fiance' of having bad taste:) I'm just gently steering her over to Philip Marcou and Holtey:) When it comes to vintage Stanleys, I'm insanely particular; I like keyholes and logo-free lever caps, low knob, a difficult distinction to make if you're not a handplane freak like us:)

Like totally weird! Hmmm, let me see, will it be up, or will it be down…..what does your fiance think about that….;^)
I have been to West Virginia in person, but that was some time ago…

Great fish ! Next time you can also try to carve a mole as they are supposed to be whacked by nature.

Fabrice, you slay me. I love Moles, but I'm yet to spot one. The previous owner of my log home had ample "mole repellant" in the garage, which leads me to believe there are moles afoot. I've had my eye on a few chipmunks, but they evade my grasp with great agility. They're not shy about stuffing their cheeks from the bird feeder, though. Oh no, Fabrice, we have drifted aloft. Only this can reel us back in :)

Al, how long will you resist making another plane just to be able to use a mole-shaped wedge ?

I really enjoyed reading your, Mads' and Div's blogs on the making of these shoulder planes. This is something I will probably think about but I don't know if I can easily pull this off without a bandsaw. I'll be keeping this in mind anyway. (of course my shoulder plane would have to have a Celtic knot shaped wedge…)

You scoundrel, Fabrice! Now a mole wedge must be added atop my projects list! It'll be no match for your celtic knot wedge, though. Don't let the lack of a bandsaw hold you back! It could be easily accomplished with any manner of straight saw. In fact, it would be more "pure" in my mind.

In fact, Fabrice, I shall embark upon a new plane adventure, honoring our mole, and resisting the lure of massive powered tools.
