Project Information

The redwood bowls, goblet, wine coaster and flower pot are made from a recycled porch. The alder for the bowl, wine stopper and small lidded box came from Tule Peak Timber. The natural edge bowl is from a nut tree here in California and that leaves the padauk bowl hiding somewhere in the middle. Most of these projects were started as a learning thing, trying to add more knowledge of different ways of working the wood.

sometimes it's nice to just play with timber & see what it wants to do (or, will allow you to do) you learn something every time you turn the lathe on, nice collection

very cool…
I gotta try turning one of these days. My only fear from what everyone tells me is, I'll get hooked and then need a bigger shop…but then again, i need a bigger shop now.
Maybe its time to get that OneWay…..

Very nice. Is the top left one made from multiple staves? Look like 3 separate pieces unless it's a trick of the light.

Also, what diameters were the largest/smallest?

I'm just starting to learn turning but am loving some of the pieces that I've seen/made (incl yours!).

NewPickeringWdWrkr, Yes, the top left is made from three pieces of wood. The majority of these pieces are aslo small boards glued together to make turnable blocks. The larger one is about 6" x 4 1/2" and the smallest, the lidded box is 1 1/8" by 2 1/2". I use whatever I have on hand when an idea pops into my head and then just make it, or try and make it. Using scraps of wood, I can learn and possibly create something without the cost of buying the expensive woods and ruin in my learning. ...besides it really is enjoyable to make something out of wood that was heading for the dump.

You turn bowls and experience the beauty of wood. I don't have a lathe but use the shape of a boot to express the growth rings ,color and all imperfections of wood to come to a beautiful expression.
