Woodcraft Gallery .... the intro....

Recently my wife, Deb, and I were fortunate enough to fly over to Christchurch, New Zealand … this was mainly to visit our daughter, Amanda, her partner, Paul and our grandson Malakai Deb wanted to see snow…It was also her birthday and our anniversary… so I killed a few birds with one stone…

Numer One Grandson … Malakai…

and to recharge my batteries.
This was the first overseas holiday we had taken in 24 years of marriage…. long overdue and now we have the travel bug…

We were only there for a week… and whilst there we visited various galleries and markets…

Of course I had to get my fix of woodworking somehow…and there was a lot of woodworking to see… Maori carvings at the Museum, craftsmen at the Art Centre and artisans at the local markets. And as you will have read in a previous post… got to meet up with Lumberjock Moshe… and he gave me some nice timber to bring home..

So for the next few days I will be posting a series about the wonderful New Zealand woodworkers…..

There are some absolutely brilliant woodworkers in NZ and over 60 of them are represented at the WoodCraft Gallery ... situated in the Arts Centre in downtown Christchurch, New Zealand.. This makes it the largest group of woodworkers in a single gallery in NZ.. if not the world..

The woods primarily used seem to be Kauri and Rimu…. but there are many other native timber that are made into magnificent items … and the paua shell features in many of the designs..

A very cute little guy Larry. He had bright eyes and looks intelligent, so I think he will probably move to Australia and take over your woodworking business when he is grown and you are ready to retire. Maybe you can get him as an apprentice first.

Riccarton Markets.

Last week while in Christchurch….I visited the local Riccarton Rotary Sunday Markets.

This market is the largest in New Zealand with over 300 stall holders each week… although only a few offer woodwork, it is of a high standard..

Should you find your self in Christchurch make a point of visiting the markets…

I had a small chat with a few of the stall holders and even bought a timber photo frame…

One of the people I spoke with was Judy from Sublime Art.. she is a pyrographer… ie she burns designs into timber….and mdf…

or as she puts it… she draws with fire…

The other was Nigel from Morgan 3D CNC Ltd. where I purchased a Rimu photo frame with an inlay all round in Paua Shell.

He has a small cnc router, laser cutter and engraving machine.

There were a couple who make striped cutting boards… at a very reasonable price.. they did not have a web address but they reckon they do well with the boards..

The other gentleman whose stall I photographed was not in attendance but the work was outstanding…

Once again a small slideshow of the visit…

I hope you enjoy this look at another part of woodworking...
