Project Information

This is my 16' Peterborough Cedar Strip Fiberglass/Epoxy canoe.
I built this over a few months back in 2004.

Since this is the biggest project I've tackled, I thought it would be a good one to start with.

I'm in the process of fully documenting the project from start to finish on my blog if you're interested in my blathering on about all the gory construction and finishing details.

Hope you like it.
Ian

Ian:

Good job, like the deck treatment. Is that a Bear Mountain Boat design?
Are you inwales maple or ash?

Hey, thanks for all the great feedback.

Link to the plan: No, I don't, I built this with a guy who does boatbuilding for a living from a set of plans that he had. I believe they are customized from the Bear Mountain 16' Prospector plans. I believe he worked with Steve Killing (architect of many Bear Mountain boats and many yachts) to design some plans for stitch-n-glue kayaks and made some changes to the canoe plans with his help.

Decks/Inwales: The decks are maple and mahogany, the handles are maple and the inwales/outwales are ash.

I've been working on posting the process on my blog at woodcanuck.wordpress.com, but I'll try and copy it over here into the blog as well. I have to get things set up to link in the pictures here as I can't just paste them in along with the text.

Wooley,

I hear ya, I'd like to build an old style cottage country cedar power boat….but my workshop is about 16'x12'. I'd have to work in the backyard! :)

If you can get a clear area that's roughly 18'x6' you can build the canoe. It'll be cozy, but it's doable. When I first went to the shop where I built this canoe, they were working out of one of those public storage rental garages, roughly 20'x20' and he had three boats on the go at one time.

He moved to a bigger place just before I started on mine, but it was probably 20'x40' and he had four or five boats on the go at a time, plus a big CNC machine, other tools and the stock of lumber for all the boats.

I cant wait to finally make my own….. I wanted to make one for like 5 years now. I'm thinking more down the line of a little fishing boat as opposed to a conoe. Either way I like the ceder strip design and it looks like such fun to make. Now thats therapy..

Nice job, can't wait for the blog
