Here is a "square" bowl I made from Sycamore. The idea came from Woodworkers Journal about 3 years ago. The difficult part is getting the square blank centered on the chuck and then preventing tear out on the corners while turning. The technique for preventing tear out is to glue sacrificial pieces of wood to each side of corners and cutting them off after you are finished. One improvement I made but do not have a picture of is to cut a small grove on the top side between the "bowl" and the base. It gives a better illusion of a bowl setting in a separate base. This piece is 6' square and 2" tall without the lid on. I have made others as large as 9"X3"
