Project Information

Another little gift for our neighbors new born. Grace was born on 9/17/2021.

I decided to make another gift for baby Grace in addition to the stepstool/seat I made for her a few day ago. It'll be a few month before she can use this but I couldn't wait to make it for her.

Made of Pine and easy to disassemble and reassemble.

There's a key in the back (shaped like a heart) when removed the chair can be taken apart. Good for building motor skills and self-esteem.

I haven't put a finish on it yet I was thinking maybe I'll let Grace's mom and dad take care of that task!

Thanks for looking in!

Finished!

Very snazzy, no sharp edges or any youchies for little kids to bump into.

I kinda think you may have been checking out too many LBD puzzles? ....for the knock down aspect?

Maybe you could call it a Luban Rocker!

Great design Tony. I see how it comes apart. I don't think I've ever seen one before. Will make for easy storage. Good idea letting the parents do the finish. I have a lot of purple spray left from my daughters wedding if you need it.
I like the name too.

I love it shaver...

Can you give me a direct top down photo so I can import into SketchUp and laser cut a swag of miniatures… May not fit the bum of even a small baby, but I can see it becoming a puzzle called "The Shaver".

Thanks Rob! My first thought was "I wonder what LBD will say" LOL!

Thanks Dave! I'm not really sure if they will want to finish it. With the new baby and all they may ask me to get that done! All so the bad part of painting a puzzle is that I find that painted parts that touch each other tend to stick together and even bind so I think a colored dye would better. What do you think?

They will love it… what a gift!

Thanks NoWhiskey! The day she is able to use it will be exciting!

Thanks crowie! There are many plans similar to this one on line. If you do a Child's Puzzle Rocking Chair search you will find plenty! I was at a sidewalk fair in Tennessee and a lady had this chair. She let me take it apart and trace all the parts onto a sheet brown paper. Her chair was a bit out of true proportion so I had to re-draw all the parts to get the chair to look right. Plus her chair was made with 1/4" ply and I made my chair with 3/4" Pine (planed to 5/8") so tweaking the slots for fit was a little tricky! There is a link on this jocks page that will lead you to a plan. It's not the same style as mine but close! https://www.lumberjocks.com/projects/279178
.

I just remembered I do have a PDF pattern for a folding child's rocker that looks like this. I can be printed on your home printer. Then you just join the sheets at the dotted lines. It's free!

Thanks Mel! A lady at a sidewalk fair was nice enough to let me trace the chair parts onto some brown paper. It's a really nice design!

Sorry shaver, should have been more specific….

If possible may I have a top down photo of the items in pieces, side by side like in gallery photo #4. The top down should minimise the parallax affect
That way I can impost the photo into SketchUp and trace over them to get the basic shape and contours.

Yes puzzles do help with motor skills and building self-esteem! Maybe she will be a Lumberjocks member someday! I will encourage it if I'm still able!

Exactly what I was after… crowie sent me a PM to do a WEB search… thanks crowie...

Amongst the plans I found, I do like the cut of you rocker. Thanks you both… but you both owe pottzy an appology as he's gonna be pissed with the publication of another LBD puzzle… The Shaver!

Oh no LBD I forgot about Pottzy! I see trouble on the horizon now! This is a pre-empted attempt to thwart any bad words aimed at me for allowing LBD to introduce a new puzzle to this site. My Apologies to you Pottzy and any others that may point a finger at me LMAO! My bad!

Tony, dye or staining can be an option if you go that route. If you spray with enamel let it dry a day or two then put it in the sun for awhile. The sun will get rid of that stickiness. Then applying a coat of wax is also a good idea. I use this method a lot.
When I sprayed those 200 plates for my daughters wedding, the 2 days drying in the family room wasn't enough. It still felt soft and a paper towel between them left impressions when I stacked them. Setting them out in the sun the next day solved the problem. Just not a good idea to spray and let them dry in the sun right away especially if the paint has primer in it. Good information direct from a paint scientist.
