Project Information

Another car to add to my garage. This one is the American Grafiti special driven by John Milner. It differs from his car by having a sun shade over the windshield and a nitro tank on the front. Also it has a jump seat. I included a cutaway photo to show the construction. This is a scratch build so there are no plans.

Their is some amazing detail in that engine and while I'm not fan of painted timber models, yours does look good sir.

I'm always puzzled by the car modelers who think these old cars were straight up & down on the sides.

Excellent job…regardless if the sides are straight up & down.

All of the details you put into this really paid off.

Maybe you should try a black '55 next so Falfa and Milner can reside on the shelf next to each other.

Thanks for posting.

Thanks for pointing out the straight sides Phil32. I am quite aware of the curve and made as much as I could in a 1/4" side as possible. Until you show me how to bend that side we will have to be happy with the straight sides. After all, this is only a representation and not an exact copy.

You have my vote Ed, after all this is a fun site to show off our work. Unfortunately it seems a few get carried away and only look for the flaws. We as woodworkers know what flaws are in the build, and hide them the best we can.

I can only think of an old saying as I was growing up "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say a word". That's my two bits.

I like the natural wood look myself but when it comes to this classic hotrod Spieilberg went with a color that would jump off the screen. It would not be the American Grafiti Hotrod without the yellow paint.

I don't like to paint a wood project BUT this is a great looking car and the paint highlights the scratch build

I like it! You have made plenty of fantastic models without paint. I think the builder should please oneself. Super nice build without a plan to follow. The Toys and Joys web site has plenty of fantastically painted models. When you are the designer and builder there are no rules! The pulleys, wires and brass are great accents on the engine!

I like it, if it wasn't painted I bet no one would guess it was John's car. I think the best thing to do is compliment the things that you like, and if there is something you don't like…just move on.
