Birdseye Maple wood tray, carved and routered from slab that was at least 30 years old. Used clear epoxy to fill in voids, and buffed these to glass clarity. Subsequent use of maple I created coasters, which were "lased" by a Woodcraft employee with a monogram which I created,

beautiful piece of wood. you say this was routed.. how did you do the edges, it looks like they are flowing different radiuses? That would be difficult with a router. Unless they are just round over and flat.

was the tearout tough to deal with?

BTW, it doesn't look birdseye, I'm not sure what it looks like, but it's beautiful.

Fantastic use of a beautiful piece of wood. My favorite part of woodworking is finding out what is hidden underneath. Nicely done.

DCooksey beat me to it. Revealing what's inside a piece of lumber is half the fun. Nice work.

The slab from which the tray was made was incredibly dense. To some extent this resisted tear out, however I roughed out the tray with the router, then used my carving experience and tools to achieve the final shape I desired. Yes! It took a considerable time, but I used sanding attachments for the router that allowed me to shape and eventually polish the project. About your comment on the shape! Good catch!! Most would not notice it. I was concerned that at some time in the future someone would attribute the work to an automated process, besides which I liked the idea of (slightly) shifting the interior oval of the tray bottom off-center and adjusting the edges shape/curve to hide the difference except to the observant! Thanks for your comments!

Overthehill that's a work of art! It looked like it was turned on a lathe to me. Must have been a lot of work routing and carving. Love the grain and Birdseye. A bit of bark in there too?

I know some people have a problem with integrating "Nature" and human perspectives, but I try to accommodate both in my projects. Yes! There's "bark" in the finished project, how could I not incorporate what nature has granted me!
From a former contact, I'm primarily a wood carver, but am reluctant to display my all "projects" because they don't fall (easily) into the "woodworker" category. Besides the "normal" router bits, and the sanding tips/tools attributed to routers, I also used "grinding" bits usually associated with "powered" wood carving tools, .. though I prefer knives and "chisels".

You ought to post the rest of your projects (as should I- I've been making wood projects for decades, but you wouldn't know it from what I've posted in the projects section- I've even had people gripe me about not posting projects. That was a lack of camera ability, though).

That's one hell of a nice project! Don't be shy, and by saying that, I should do the same. ;^)

I'll ask the missus if my next door neighbor remembers and I'll tell you if I then remember.

With our memory (well mine) fading, may I suggest you just write them up here at LJ… International postage is a killer nowadays and you haven't got my address… too long to wait via Santa.

I have been reviewing some of the offerings, apparently "carvings" fall into some categories. I've been carving for over 50 years, with some (loosely labeled) wood working projects. Hope some will find these interesting.
