Project Information
I made this in November 2018 as a jewellery box for my partners Christmas present.
She had not counted on it being an engagement present! She said yes but the Walnut engagement ring has been replaced with a somewhat more expensive diamond one. The upside of the Walnut one was that it was easily adjusted to fit with a file).
The box is constructed from solid Ash with the grain pattern matched round it. The lid of the box is a piece of Cedar that was set into a rabbet in the frame of the lid. I then used perfling (used on guitars) to create an inlay but put two strings of this around the cedar to give a bolder pattern and contrast. The lid just sits on a lip in the top compartment.
The top compartment of the box is fitted with a Tulipwood tray lined with silk moire fabric on a light cardboard backing and a ring holder from rolled up foam which was covered with the fabric. and hot glued in place.
The draw sits on ash runners that are housed in a stopped dado. This was also lined.
Handles were a couple of waste pieces of ash cut with a hand saw and sanded. These were then drilled through and brass rods pushed through and secured with epoxy. This method was also used to secure the handle to the lid and drawer.
The "ring" was out of a piece of Walnut with an Ash "diamond"
We got married on Sept 7th 2019.
