Project Information

This is from The Woodsmith Shop, although I think the basic concept predates their show. Marc Spagnuolo has some interesting boxes with similar design and I think he credits Dave Knipfer. I made this one a bit larger than the Woodsmith plans. I also used their joinery approach with dowels, although I think there is a much easier and more accurate way using tongue and groove cut with the same set up as the bottom. I used Brusso JB-103 stop hinges and lined this one in black felt, but now I wish I had used green. This was a prototype of sorts as I plan to make a bunch of them and also incorporate photo transfers on the bottom of the lid. Stay tuned and thanks for watching.

Really has a lot of WOW power, nice box.

I agree the dark green would have been a better choice, but the black works pretty well. What shade did you use on the Maple. I figure it's a dye? Also are the sides painted, dyed?

Thanks for posting.

I really like this box. It's elegant, and looks fairly straightforward to make. Are the dowel joints hard to line up?

Thanks all. Underdog, re the dowels, I thought they were hard to line up. Not hard to drill with precision using a jig or template (the plans show a certain type), but still a bit awkward to line up when gluing. I think there is a better way using tongue and groove.

Steve & Underdog, I used trans tint dye with lots of experimentation. The dowels are not hard to drill with precision but they are hard to line up when glueing.
