Project Information

In late May or early June I had a pretty nasty kickback accident on my table saw. Put me in the ER for some gluing and stitching… I decided to take the time to upgrade my saw some to make it safer and work better for me. The best change for safety was I installed a Shark Guard with kick back pawls and splitters. I added a fold down table to the back of the saw and made it so I have 25" sawing capabilities on the right side. Had to expend the rail and add table to the right side. I've had this saw for over 12 years and have reconfigured it several times. Trying to adjust to very limited space. I think I am going to be real happy with this setup.

Nice setup, I have had kick back because the material tilted as it dropped down off the back of the saw table for lack of extension, I quickly corrected that. by adding an extention. Kicks are very dangerous even deadly. Be safe!

Sorry to hear of your misadventure, hope you healed well.

That Shark will keep you safe. Just remember the ONLY time you HAVE to remove it is on non through cuts, like dados. Otherwise there are workarounds, and that "it's too small a piece to use my guard," is just a BS excuse. Right up there with I can't see what I'm doing. I hardly have the heart to tell them if they are looking at the blade they are doing it wrong. When making dado's, and any other non through cuts, your fingers should be at least 6" from the blade. Don't go inside that perimeter, and your fingers will stay attached. Once again it requires thinking about how to make a cut, and using jigs, and safety devices, but there is always an answer that should never lead to injury.

The outfeed table should be required for a saw to sell, but it's not, and that will also help your safety, as well as help keeping your cuts nice. So it will improve accuracy, and safety.

Think safe, be safe, and with what you are changing I can see you are thinking safety, good on you.

nice upgrades that shark guard will help a lot.it's too bad it takes an accident to get us to do what we should have done all along.the last kick back i had was several years ago and luckily besides the large bruise on my belly only my ego was hurt which got me to install a micro jig splitter,i havn't had an issue since.safety doesn't end with jigs and attachement's the best safety feature is common sense.thanks for sharing this.

I purchased 16" folding shelf brackets from Home Depot. They are rated for up to 880 pounds. They work great.

Awesome upgrades, added the Sharkguard website to my bookmarks. Will give it serious thought as I've already lost half a finger to an unguarded blade. Probably a done deal if my grandson takes an interest in a few years, (he just turned one). Thanks for this.

Won't make you saw any safer in your "Bookmarks". :). I have thought about the Shark Guard since I bought my saw 12 years ago. It cost a whole lot less than my visit to the ER and I was lucky, a fraction of an inch deeper, I would have cut tendons to a couple of my finger on the left hand. It scrapped them, the doctor lifted the skin and showed me!!

Golly Paul, that one serious injury.
On the table saw setup, looks good; I wish I had the space for such a good looking unit.
Look after your hand and blessings for a full & speedy recovery.
