Project Information
Segmented bowl with 2 waves. Constructed of hard maple, red paint air-brushed, and finished with 5 coats of wipe-on polyurethane. Measures about 11 inches in diameter, and 6 inches high. Inspired by the Wave Bowl technique created by John Beaver.
I built the bowl over-sized to account for the waves, then cut the waves from the over-sized bowl on the band-saw using a special jig patterned after one designed by John Beaver. Once the waves were cut, I re-assembled the bowl on the lathe (with MDF spacers in place of the waves) and turned the bowl's outside profile to final dimension. I painted the waves, then glued them in place using a set of registration dowels. Doing it this way, I get a near-perfect match in the brickwork and glue lines between the segments.
The MDF spacers were 'kerfed' to allow them to bend without getting them wet or heating in the microwave.
