Project Information

Got a little commission job here. (A couple $100 closer to my new Table Saw.)

Two Poplar Newel posts, 7" to 5" diameters, and 36" long. See the original in white. The customer wanted to add 10" to it to make it 36".
You can also see the raw blank next to the original post, and one of the 45-ed blanks on the lathe. (Colt Stratos)

Took over twice as long as estimated (6 hr).
Took me 5 hours just to prep and glue the blanks, and another 8 hours to 45 the corners, fit a loose tenon, and then turn it down to specifications.

But it was a satisfying job. Turned out well I thought.
If I had to do it over, I'd look at the aspect ratio and curve the tapered part. But it's done and delivered. Yay!

And boy howdy that shop is a MESS!

They look great to me!
Too bad there isn't a way to collect all those chips, huh?
Thanks for sharing.

I'm told they are newel posts. I doubt I'll see the installation though.

Congrats on the commission. Anything that helps out to bring in tools to the shop.

Looks great. Just curious is that a solid or hollow in the middle?

Solid. Took 32 board feet, and I used every bit of it. Well, except for the 4" of woodchips on the floor.
Could explain why my shoulders are a little sore.
