Project Information

This is my first attempt at making a lampshade. I needed one for that red cedar lamp I made a while back and did some research on the shape and sized it should be for the shape and size of the lamp.

It is 5" diameter at the top and 15" diameter at the bottom and the 10 3/16" staves are 9 1/2" long. I made a drill fixture for all the 1/8" holes and found some 1/16 round real leather lacing to connect all the staves. I first connected them all through the middle holes and then I welded two 1/8" steel rings for the top and bottom to tie the staves to- to keep the round shape. It came out kind of hokey but I think I'll keep it being the first attempt.
I'm thinking a glue in wood ring at the top and bottom with the right angle cut on it might be easier???

It is finished with Danish Oil and clear gloss lacquer

Thanks, Pete. I tried making one from a log. I had it roughed out, quit for the night and in the morning it was cracked everywhere. So I thought I'd try this method this time.

I really like the way you made that lampshade. I've wondered for years how you could make a wooden lampshade look good and you've done it. Great looking lamp. Those last 2 pics are beautiful.

Thanks Bob and John.

Hi John After I got it done, light showed through all the cracks between the sand and I thought that was not good so I called it hokey!! I'm thinking that if I every make another one, I would make a half rabbet cut on all the edges so that overlap about 1/16 and light does not come through.

Thanks, Doug. if you make one just this size, you can use my jig and template. I'd have t make you the rings to wrap around.

Good looking shade, Jim! I like the light peeking out between the staves. How thick are the pieces?

Thanks, Cliff and Candy.

Hi Candy. the staves are 3/16" thick. I thought I would not like the light showing through but maybe it does look okay!!

cheers, Jim
