Project Information

This was a 2014 project for a gift. I wouldn't have much I could use it for, but turned out not too bad for Christmas scenes. Okay, it's not a masculine piece by any stretch.

I followed a tutorial for a compass rose made from veneer and it was sheer hell to do this with a pull saw. Later, I found a paradigm-shifting tutorial from whoever he is who goes by "The apprentice and the journeyman" that shows inlays built in 3-d and then sliced on the bandsaw. I have several remaining near-perfect roses after watching that for < 30 seconds and going out and creating a horribly dangerous jig for my little Li ryobi miter saw that produced a seriously awesome result, although, destroying a small clamp in the process and teaching me a lesson on kickback.

I hadn't yet discovered proper joints, and so this is basically cheap plywood bonded by screws and pocket holes, and then veneered with maple and padauk.

Beautiful contrasting wood box. That inlayed star is outstanding.
