Project Information
Two bowls from a Yellow Cedar Burl. The large bowl is 14" D X 7.5" H. The smaller is 11" D X 4.25" H. When I started turning the burl I was concerned that it would split in two. The bark seam seemed to go right through it. When I cored the smaller bowl out I was happy to see it stay in one piece. I did super glue the seams in both bowls once I had them roughed out. Both finished the same, a coat of Boiled Linseed oil and many coats of wipe on poly.
The faller who gave me this burl cut it off before the tree was skidded or handled too much, so the bark stayed in good shape. The next Yellow Cedar Burl I'll be working on had pretty much all the bark ripped off.
I chose the Poly finish since it blends right in with any super glue that might be exposed. I figured it would help keep the bark on as well. I did spend time picking the moss off the bark, the burl must have been on the North side of the tree.
A note to anyone who wants to try a poly finish, if this bowl gets scratched by a ring or something else, I find it easy to repair, a bit of sanding and applying the poly again just in that area. The finish does protect the wood. That being said I like the way it goes on other woods better, the next Yellow Cedar Burl I mentioned will have either an oil or a wax finish.
