Project Information

I have a classmate who runs a workshop for adults with special needs.
This workshop is celebrating 50 years in our town this year. The workshop provides a safe environment for daily actives and very simple jobs for physically and mentally challenged adults.
Its a great organization who gets no state or federal funding.
So every year they have a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser and auction of donated items and community services to raise funds for sustainability and new items.
I usually donate cutting boards to the auction, but this year I stepped it up a notch.
I constructed a Little Free Library of Qt. Sawn oak framing and rough sawn cedar.
The base floor of the LFL is 5/4 oak and also all the structural framing.
Panels were set in tongue and groove rails and styles.
Front door is tempered glass.
Roof is 1/2 in plywood with ice and water shield and cedar shingles i added the copper roof cap for kicks with all copper nails.
Coated the entire project with Sikkens Clear Cetol , roof also .
Its fun to create a project from a design build aspect that is of your own ideas and concepts with no expectations other than your own.
I added a shelf and battery operated pull chain LED light.
6×6 cedar post was the support which was pre assembled and drilled.
All the new owner had to do was get the hole dug set the box on top and add two bolts.
Cheers ….

What a great cause that workshop is! I love hearing stories about people pitching in and helping out!

The library looks great, and you put a lot of care and workmanship into it. I'm sure its future owner will be thrilled with !

(By the way, I saw plans for a library like this in one of the magazines recently. I'm curious how this idea of the free library, where people leave, and take, books works in actual practice. If people really use it as intended, or if they just take the books, and it just sits empty and unused.)

Mean_Dean: I built a little free library for my wife, and there are now about 5 in our neighborhood. In practice, some of the books do disappear, and you have to replenish them. But we have teachers and others that like to donate books to the LFL. So, sometimes there are too many books, and we 'store' them for a bit, and other times, my wife has to hit a few garage sales to restock the thing. The kids (and adults) in our neighborhood just love the Library, and it's often a place where you can find a family looking thru the latest offerings. Also, we find that the books 'travel' from LFL to LFL.

Here's a shot of our LFL in last stage of construction, prior to mounting in the front yard. Top=Adults/OlderKids, Bottom=YoungerKids

RC, thanks for letting me know how they're working out there in the world. It's got me thinking about building one for my neighborhood!
