Project Information

This 4 drawer chest measures 31"H x 37 1/2" W x 20" D. It's made without any plans or drawings. I usually just do various steps as I go along. WARNING, that is NOT the best way to start or do a project. I used 12/4 quarter (3") spanish cedar because at that time I could get it at the 4/4 board ft. price of $3. I'm very sorry to say that source no longer exists. When finished, it looks so much like mahogany, that on more than 1 occasion, the professional judge at the Florida state fair "fine handcrafted furniture" competition in different years ( different judges) thought it was mahogany. The top may not show in the pics, but it is beautifully tiger-striped lumber. The finish is wipe on tung-oil/varnish rubbed out with 0000 steel wool. The ball & claw feet with pierced talons and the embellishments on the front of the chest were my first try at carving. The side and back panels are waterfall bubinga and sand shaded maple veneer. It took longer than expected to get them right, but by the 4th leg it took a lot less time to get it done.

Art, this is absolutely beautiful and so nicely done. The carving is extraordinary for it being your first. I suggest that you take up carving on a regular basis since you obviously have a gifted talent for it.
