Project Information

Two days after I retired from the Prison, I was on a plane to Germany. I had the privilege while in Europe to visit the U.S. Cemetery at Omaha Beach. A humbling and extremely moving experience. It had been my goal to collect some rocks from all the beaches. Unfortunately, I was not able to visit Gold, Sword or Juno Beaches. I made these plaques and gave them to friends who I knew would appreciate them. The plaque with Operation Overlord is mine and displayed in my Man Cave. It also has a the only rock I could recover at Pointe du Hoc. I dug it out of the dirt next to the concrete of the northern most gun emplacement. I get goose bugs every time I think about or speak of that visit. I can of only one other place as moving. Someday I hope to visit Arlington National Cemetery.

Bob;

Great story and great projects.

Visiting the Normandy coast is my dream vacation-maybe when I retire.

Thanks so much for sharing.

Great idea, and a nice display …. Very few WWII guys left any more.

Nice work Bob. I am sure those guys really appreciated it.

Every time someone mentions Omaha Beach, I can't help but think of my wife's 2nd cousin Jim. We saw him just before the 50th Anniversary celebration in France. I asked if he wanted to go back? He said once was plenty.

Nice tribute and memory on that taerible but glory day. It reminds me on Saving private Ryan movie scene where Tom Seizmore collects dirt in cans from various battlefields.

Very touching to the heart. I applaud and thank all you veterans out there. We wouldn't have nothing if it weren't for you all.

Wonderful tribute! Was in the Navy, on a ship off the coast for 50th anniversary. Beautiful, and humbling at the same time as the sun rose, and I could see the beach, imagining the landings! Father served in Merchant Marines during WW2. Your plaques brought back that experience, pride for my father, and my Navy pride for those before me.

What a wonderful tribute to our heroes! My father in law was in the D Day invasion and I always considered him a hero and made sure my sons knew it. Thank you for your service and for sharing this project.
