Part 2

Due to poor weather I had a chance to machine the lid for the box. Once again the saw was put to use to scallop the outer edges of the top curving up to leave a flat area on top.
Wood Table Automotive design Art Artifact

The box measures 300mm long x 200mm wide and 150mm high.
Now I have the box size finalised I can start working the veneer and designs of the marquetry.
This is the design for the top.
Art Rectangle Font Wood Pattern

This is the first time I have used a scroll saw to cut a packet of veneers.
the ground is American walnut with Tawa (unsure).I have used a piece of Silky oak and Tawa as wasters.
hopefully if all goes well I might be able to use the Silky oak and Tawa for another project.
I am using a 2/0 blade in the scroll saw.

Green Rectangle Botany Textile Creative arts

I did not know how the Tawa would hold together so I used masking tape over the veneer so it would not break during sawing. I suppose I should have used veneering tape or sized veneer with glue (sorry Shipwright for not staying traditional)
Out of here like a bold man!!!!

Looks good. Your cutting looks excellent, better than I can do with a scroll saw.

As for the veneer reinforcement, whatever works for you. For me, because I have my pot of HHG in the shop all the time, it is easiest to back my veneers with newsprint paper. I think either that or veneer tape will hold tiny pieces better than masking tape but if it's working for you and you're happy with it, I won't be giving you static. :)

Looking forward to the next segment. This is going to be a very nice piece.

You have to love rainy days as you get time to play!! ( to wet to work on the building site).
Finished cutting and assembling some of the marquetry that I plan to use on the box.
Brown Textile Wood Rectangle Creative arts

You may see on one piece of marquetry it has a clear film on it. I have used a product called Dura seal which people cover book covers with for protection to assemble the marquetry on as it has a sticky surface to it and holds the pieces in the right place then I put veneering tape on the opposite side and remove the Dura seal.
I started to put borders of American walnut around the top so I can start cutting in the Zebrano.

Wood Yellow Flooring Floor Hood

After a marathon of gluing with hot hide glue I had managed to veneer the top of the lid.

Looks very nice.
Is there a reason you didn't shade the flowers?

I took time from my busy work day to visit the elderly gentleman Warren (mentor I suppose) who has just had a stroke and showed him the jewellery box. we both felt there should be something on the inside of the lid, I chose the Totara burr (Totara is a native timber to New Zealand) and to show my gratitude to Warren for all his help I cut in a motif he gave me.

Got home walked through the garage and thought lets do some veneering so switched on the hot glue pot and veneered the bottom of the box. veneering inside a restricted space seemed strange.
Wood Rectangle Natural material Table Wood stain

With that out of the way I decided to give the sides ago.
Brown Flower Textile Sleeve Plant

Well that went well with the old mind thinking of things that could go wrong but just took my time and worked over and into the curves with the veneering hammer making sure that the veneer did not shift from the walnut strip that runs around the top of the box.
With that side going okay so did the other.

In my experience trying to hammer veneer marquetry was a disaster. How did you keep all the pieces together?

Also your last photo didn't come up. :)

I notice 1 of the posted photos did not appear showing one of the sides so I thought I would up-date things.

Next task will be trimming back the walnut veneer on the corners to take the Zebrano strips.

I have planned to trim back the walnut veneer back by 6mm(1/4") and glue in a strip of zebrano on the corners.
I made a cutting guide using 18mm dowel, a hobby knife blade and a round piece of nylon which I had to turn on a metal working lathe to the shown shape as a stock, with a flat stock I would not get a parallel cut on the concave curves.

So I set to after a couple of trial runs and away I went!

After I cut through the veneer I heated the veneer with a clothing iron to reactivate the hide glue and removed the strip of veneer.

Then I set about cutting in the zebrano veneer. I am trying to keep the grain of the zebrano square to the cuvre of the box. (trying)

Hi All, slowly cutting the zebrano into the strip cut into the corners and bottom edge. I hope I am doing right as I have found next to nothing on the internet that I can find. Before I could veneer the bottom strips I had to veneer the under side edge.

Once the veneer glue is set I trim it to shape then veneer the strip with the zebrano.

Hi All, back to the jewellery box after big work commitments.
After a time consuming exercise I finally finished the zebrano strip to the corners and edges.

The last veneering to be done is a band around the upper area on the inside of the box.

With all the veneering done there is going to be and endless amount of sanding. But been in the mood to cut wood I have decided to make the dividers and tray for the inside from American walnut.
First I made the lower dividers with raised ends as centralisers to centralise the top tray.

Then I cut and glued the tray for the top level. Taping the pieces end on to each other makes the gluing of the pieces a lot easier.

Hi All, After the arduous task of sanding I have finally got the jewelry box to the stage I always dread WHAT finish to apply.

Now I have given the box the first sand using 100 grit paper I better think about filling the pores of the grain to achieve a flat finish so the grain is not visible. So I think I can do 2 things, 1st is to ask google or 2nd ask the readers here at LJ that read this blog for their suggestions which are always helpful and are always taken into consideration.
Thanks for reading.

Personally, my choice for this would be French polish.
Here is the best "how to" you are likely to find …. anywhere.
I have seen Patrice's work and have watched him polish. Trust me, he knows what he is doing.

The couple of times I have used commercial grain fillers I did not like the look or the process. While I have never done any French polish I love the look and feel of a project done that way. I don't think it would take any longer then using commercial fillers available. As pretty as this is it deserves the best finish possible. Good luck.

Well it has been awhile since I posted any progress on the box due to work commitments. I last blogged that I was going to french polish the box with the help and instruction from my elderly mentor. With 3 coats of shellac I contacted my friend with bad news that he was having major health issues. Recounting our conversations I started grain filling the pores of the box with shellac and talc.Warren (my mentor) likes to use talc and has done for 40 odd years as trying to get pumice (4F) in New Zealand is like trying to get rocking horse poo. I got a lot of filling done then shifted into a hotel room that is 700km from home for which I will be living in for the next 12 months for work. Odd nights after work I completed the filling to the box with no questions from the hotel staff what the smell was from.
Still with my friend out of action and 700 km away I bit the bullet watched Patrick Edwards video on you tube serval times and had ago at french polishing. The sample piece I tried out on worked okay so I jumped in boots and all. The results were as I am concerned for my first effort not to bad, other people will think otherwise. So for my 13 day Christmas break I got the box finished and did 2 other boxes (see project entries)and will be going back for a rest.

Once I am back home in Auckland I will catch up with Warren on major pointers on my first effort of french polishing.
I have learnt so much building this box from machining curves with a skill saw, scroll sawing veneer packets, hammer veneering curved surfaces, grain filling, the very basic french polishing effort and so much more to list it has been so great. It is aways good to learn.
That's all Folks !!!!
Thanks to those who has place comments and those LJ's who have inspired me since joining this woodworking community.
