Project Information

I have been working on this project since Christmas - off and on. It started out as an old pine rolling pin that somebody gave me. The first faces were just doodling but they looked quite good so I had to get serious and carve them all properly. The faces are Netsuke in style which was a little tricky and pine doesn't generally lend itself to fine detail. I had to make new knives with very thin blades to cut detail like the hairs on some of the heads. The thin blades don't push the wood sideways so much when cutting and therefore reduce break out. My blades are stiff and strong but delicate. Only good for fine work. I do have lots of other thicker knives for roughing out and broad detailing.
