Project Information

I made a little treasure chest for my grandson Tyler, just a bit of cheap pine , coopered top (I had to work that out from scratch - not easy) , little tray (otherwise he'd have too much treasure at once) , finished in Brywax & filled with chocolate coins - total cost about £15. When Tyler saw it he said "A pirate chest! A REAL one!"
I'll never make any money woodworking , but the look on his little face was priceless )
Last pic is him with the Smurf (Murphy , one of the hellhounds)

You did an excellent job on building this for your grandson. The added touch of the chocolate coins is priceless too. Well done.

Colin, That's a great chest. I've been dreaming of building one for my first grandson, he's 5 months. I've got a couple of years to finalize my plans. I'm gonna save your for future reference. Thank you.

I love this box! I have a similar old box which I'm pretty sure came from a stage wagon in the 1800's. It's worm eaten and rustic and really cool. I plan to replicate it someday, but the big snag I run into is the coopered top (which I didn't know what it was called till now, thanks :) Maybe I should put that on my projects list sooner rather than later. I just hope it comes out as nice as the one you made.

Thanks for the kind words - And apologies to smittycabinetshop who I have unwittingly plagiarised with my sign off comment - now I'll have to steal another one!

no plan - sorry - just winged it. The footprint was governed by the plank size and everything else was just kept in "pirate chest" proportion (lots of images on the interweb) good luck!!)

That is a one nice looking chest!
I love the strips of wood running over the coopered top. Thin boiled strips of wood?

Sadly I don't have boiling facilities (I tried steaming still too brittle and I snapped a couple) so I just made a former and laminated a couple of 1/32" strips together - did the job and didn't burn my fingers!
