Project Information

I saw this Elliptical jig a few times and though I would give making one a try. My son in law needed an oval plaque to mount his huge Door knocker on so I just through one of these jigs together and what do ya know! It works great!
I even made one for my son to give to him as a Xmas gift. It's a great way to make oval's.
Here is a YouTube that explains how it works.

That is a easy way jig to make an oval Tony and I am glad you made one .
That plaque turned out just beautiful
I built one of these years ago but haven't used it in a long time and to go back a little further a friend of mine had one but didn't use it for routing but to pass the time and called it his BS MILL .
All that said it's a great jig and you will have a lot of fun with it .
Here is my old jig with dovetail tracks but one slider is MIA .

Thanks for posting this. I've known about them for years but never seen one work. The video was the kind of thing that gets a woodworkers mind going, planning new projects to use one on.
I'm glad yours worked out well. Maybe some day I'll finish my current project and make something oval ….. just so I can make the jig. :)

That's great Tony, I never thought an oval would be so easy to make.
Might just have to make one myself.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi buddy, it's been awhile since you shared some of your genius with us. I am definitely going to make me one of those jigs. Your door knocker looks awesome. Thanks for the link.

Very nice jig Tony and a beautiful plaque for that really nice doorknocker. I've been thinking of making one of these for a long time, but I never seem to make anything with an oval shape to get me motivated.

thanks for sharing tony. I've been wanting to make something like this, but like everyone else haven't been able to carve out the time to do so. That video is a great explanation tho.

How do you mount the jig to the workpiece? does friction hold it in place or do you clamp it? or screws?

Thanks for the nice comments everyone.

DIYaholic, Don't put it on your list. It's a scrap wood project with a few Machine bolts, nuts and washers. LOL!

Dave, I'm happy to have helped, Making oval's is so easy now. But only when I need one! :)

Lee, Genus? LOL! I'm still watching all that goes one here on Lumberjocks. Some of my projects have just been repeats of things I have already posted so I didn't post any of them. Step stool's and a few jigs. Actually I have been spending most of my time putting up Crown Molding the past few weeks.

Kiefer, Knowing you I'm sure you can make that MIA dovetail track. I'd bet my pay check on it!

Paul, Same as me, My son in law needing a plaque got me motivated!

Mike, I never needed to make an oval for anything either. Now that I have this jig I may try using it to making an oval picture frame with it. That ought to be fun!

Tooch, I know what you mean about having the time to do everything you want to do. Seems the older I get the faster the time goes by.

Bob, Give it go! It's easy, I'll put some measurements up for you.

a1Jim, Thanks Jim, I was surprised at how well it work on my first attempt.

Roger, Thanks, My son in law keeps me busy.

The jig I made my son is 9" X 9" X 3/4 MDF topped with 1/4" Masonite to form the T slot.
The travelers are 2" L. you can also dove tail them like you see in the photo Klaus posted or do a key slot. I put a machine bolt through the middle and double nut to lock the swing arm in place. I drilled holes every inch in the swing arm, but you can put the holes any place you need them. Measure off the center bolt to the router bit, that X 2 is your oval's length then center the other bolt and set the width measurement.

U bet!!! My grandpa made something like this as a gag gift kind of thing, it was smaller and instead of the router plate he put a turn crank handle on it and called it a sap machine. Because if you sat and turned it you were a sap, since it didn't really do anything LOL

I have some things that this will really help in makeing but I have to wait till I a place to work at before I can even make it let alone use it. I will most likely have to get another Router as well since my big one would be a pain to use on this plus it's pretty much at home in the table now. Always need a reason to get another tool and this wil work for that.
