Project Information

This is a dining room table I built a few years ago. We had just moved into a new house and I had a bit of a deliemna. We needed a dining table, but I didn't have a place for a proper shop in that home. I wasn't about to go and BUY a table from some furniture store. That would be woodworking blasphemy! :) So, I came up with a really simple design that I could execute with just a few tools. The entire table is red oak. For the top, I special ordered two 2'X8'X 1 1/2" thick oak slabs from Menards. If you've never seen those, they are made up of a bunch of thin oak boards glued face to face (which makes them quite stable). I glued the two slabs together, added some breadboard ends, and routed the edges. That's what I call an easy table top! The base is made out of red oak that I pulled off the shelf at Menards (my planer was in storage), and I just designed it to require as few cuts as possible.
In the end, it's not the table I would have built if I had all my tools on hand, but I'm pleased with it. I had a total of $500 in material for this table, and I certainly could not have purchased a quality table for anywhere near that.

Thanks for looking!

Purdy. What are the outside dimensions? I've been wanting to build a trestle dinning room table, but more of a mediaval style.

Thanks for the comments guys.

LJackson, I believe the top ended up being 46×94. I was a little nervous about leaving it so wide, but we have a large dining room. I ended up being very happy with the size. If we ever move into a smaller house, I could easily cut down the top and even shorten the trestle if I needed to.
