Project Information

These two coat rack were going to be the pet toy box that I was going to donate to Vilas County Humane Society, but I couldnt bring myself to cut such pretty natural wood to make that project. So I took a good long look at the board and decided to challenge myself to doing a project with nothing but hand tools.

I started with a draw knife has been in the family for quite a while, skinned off most of the rough bark so I could get a real good feel for shape, once I cut the board apart and shaped the ends with a handsaw, files did the rest on the ends. Sanding blocks to finish smoothing out the face and back. The only power tool that was used was my drill press to get the exact depth and angle for each peg hole. I did attempt to do it with a brace and bit but I kept screwing up the angle.

I was very impressed by how much of the grain color popped with natural stain and 2 coats of poly. Such lovely wood!

What does natural stain do to the wood? Is there a noticable difference in wood that has been stained in that color and then had a polyurethane applied vs. just the polyurethane?

Some day I may decide to complete a project using nothing but power tools. Just to be different!
