Project Information

Clay rolling and cutting board
adjustable thickness

Just a small project for one of my other joys, clay.
When working in clay I sometimes need 'sheets' of clay in same thickness.
So I made this table top to solve the job.
Materials: a piece of MDF, some old wood blinds and a piece of a parasol.
Then I just stack as many blinds as I need to get the desired thickness, easy and simple, no rocket. anyone can do this blindfolded…

Pictures:
1. The table top.
2. Some old wooden blinds.
3. Cut to fit MDF..
4. Piece of parasol rod cut to size.
5. Hole through the blinds and a counter sunk screw.
6. Raku fired vase by me, made from clay rolled to thickness.

Working with clay is so rewarding. No waste and no mistakes. So much fun to see what comes out of the kiln, especially when using glazes.

Hi hi ho and a bottle of rum.
Eric, thanks.
Soda, big smile here, so happy to see you.
Ken, I have access to a kiln where I do my clay croquis, so I can burn what I need. ;-) Lucky I am.
Deaon, thank you, the vase is raku burned, great fun and gives a feeling of nature to the final result that I like.

Here another little vase done in that way.
Philip, I think I am on a search, clay, wood, wood print, lino, watercolor, ink, pen on paper… you name it, I love it all, but feel like I am searching in blindness for the right one. Perhaps there are no right one, perhaps the meaning is the search, to explore… Any way, I love the Odyssey and feel sometimes I manage to get the expression out of the material that I want - so I guess that's kind of a success…
Steve, yes the days are too short, but as long as we enjoy them, it feels fine and we will one day leave happy.
Jim, I had been looking at those old blinds for a long time, thinking one day you will come in handy. ;-)
mcoyfrog, next step: http://www.mypotterytools.com/
SCOTSMAN, smiles here thanks.
Lew, yes I also love that element of surprise. Biggest problem is what to do with all that stuff… lol.
Ian, think you can see Japan is a great inspiration to me, even I never been there. ;-)

Mads

Very nice pottery Mads. Your thicknesser would work great for thin pizza too! I didn't know anything about Raku pottery before seeing your post here so I looked it up and learned a little about the process. Very interesting, especially the part about putting the hot pottery out of the kiln into a can with combustibles, and sealing it air tight while it burned for the second time! I am wondering if you have your own kiln and if it is difficult for you to get hold of the Raku clay, or if it's something you can blend yourself.

My mother's hobby was working with ceramics and doing what she called china painting, that is, painting after the glaze was baked on, The paint was kind of special and it was more like a dye than thick paint. She had here own kiln and she let me make some stuff too. It was a lot of fun and a very fond memory of spending quality time with my mom.

Smiles,
Tanks Roger and myfrog.
Mike, thanks, yes it's really interesting RAKU firering. I don't have a garden now, so I have no place to put a RAKU pit, so I have used one of a woman doing it. As soon as I get a place, I want one! They can be made at quite fair prices.
I do have full acces to a normal clay oven and use this for my clay croquis figures also.
The clay I buy from a big dealer in Copenhagen.
Sounds like wonderful memories with your mom, there are someting special about the moments where we create together.

This is from clay croquis, I love this, shaping clay after live model.
Each figur you have 2×20 minutes to finish.
