First toboggan ever made, its from black ash. 9/16" thick 15" wide and 5' long still a beginner at steam bending but its going to get better and better every project
Pretty darn nice work on steam bending, this toboggan came out great. It's hard to tell for sure from the pictures, but it looks like you bent the runners as one piece in lieu of multiple laminations. Is this the case? Great job either way.
Well, first toboggan I've seen that wasn't commercially built. Very well done. I tried steam bending a few times without very good success, it is almost an art in itself. Not a as easy as it looks like it would be. Congratulations. Terrific job.
Very nice, I have wanted to make one for years. My wife gave up waiting on me and picked one up at an estate sale so i guess I won't be making one after all.
Very cool! Just like they were back in childhood, including the yellow rope. This has been on my list of "in the future…" builds, thanks for the inspiration!
The toboggan I have from my childhood (45+ years ago, sadly) has a chain running from the top of the curve to the first slat on the base. It is in tension and I presume to keep the curve from springing up. you might consider this if it starts to revert to its natural shape.
I have to wax it before using it , and the varnish is not totally hardened it wont be till thursday, just in time for the weekend. I dont think that steam bent will let go, i did manoir for a horse sleigh couple years ago and its still good so i hope it does the same. Steam bending is an art of its self and also some science that i think, i did end up with 3 piece of scrap sometime because the wood grain is not exactly nice or the other time it wasnt steamed enaugh that the wood fibers werent steamed enought that i think
