Project Information
This a Christmas gift. Hard Maple & Walnut.
Steps:
1. Start with 3/4" stock from Father in Law
2. Cut to approximate length with handsaw
3. Joint edges for gluing with handplane
4. Glue-up
5. Use Jig-saw to cut out basic shape
6. Break out the heavy cambered wooden Jack plane, jointer plane, and smoothing plane….plane a gradual taper from the 3/4 handle down to a little under 1/2". 3-4 hours of work on hard maple…not recommended.
6. Hand-plane 1.5 inch taper at the front end of the paddle. (same process for the cutter).
7. Use router table to rout a round-over on the handle and back edges of the paddle section.
8. Sand to a nice finish with Random orbital sander.
9. Apply 2 coats of mineral oil.
10. Wipe with wet rag to raise the grain. Then sand smooth again.
11. Apply 3-5 coats of mineral oil.
This turned out as good I I could have hoped having been the first time I've glued up a panel of any kind, first time using hard maple, and first time making a pizza peel or cutter. Despite the odd color of the cutter…There is no stain…the cutter was made from a rather wacky-looking cut-off from the maple board from the main body of the peel….almost threw it away.
Thanks for looking!
