Project Information

I've found these little cabinets useful for personal use and have made them for others. Machinist cabinet look. Simple 1/4" x 1/4" dados in the cabinet sides spaced for the depth of drawers desired. I've made them with dividers in the drawers and without. Straight forward = The drawer bottom doubles as the runners for the drawer in the cabinet. Simple rabbets on the drawer corners - with bottoms glued and tacked to the drawer frame. allow a 1/16" on each side for the drawer bottom with some candle wax and they slide easily without jamming. I've made them in various shapes and sizes - most often in red oak but also in utility pine for the garage, too. Great for small collectibles, thread cabinet, small tools, pocketknives, and other smalls to which you want convenient access.

Very nice. I need some narrow drawers for my shop. I think I've found the plan.

I agree, useful little cabinets. Like the simple design and looks good stained or plain. I could see adding some felt to really set it off but with these, anything goes, from tools to jewelry. Great design, great job!

Very nice cabinets. One idea to "dress them up" a little would be to use partial overlay drawer fronts to cover the raw plywood edge.

Paul…..nice work there…..and I agree, these are a nice design. I've built a few also for under bench storage and a shop cart.

WOOD magazine (May 2008) has plans using this design.

At last, a home for my pocketknife collection. I like the straightforward design that provides plenty of opportunity for customization. Thanks for showing the way.

Nice. Do you think you needed the drawer sides to be as big as thick as you made them, or would a 1/4 inch wall suffice?

JL7 (Jeff) - Thanks for the WOOD Magazine citation, I'm sure that's probably the original source, since that's the only mag I get.

natenaaron - Yes, you can probably downsize the drawer components thickness to 1/4". If you want to use a bit more than just glue holding the bottom to the drawer frame, need to have some delicate brads for the task. 1/2" all around isn't overwhleming, IMHO

Thanks all!

Does anyone else review their projects posted here and find it interesting which are the most often viewed and favored? My barnwood projects and a business card holder have caught the eye of the most. And now, these little cabinets have attracted more views in 10 days than some projects have in all the years posted here. If my project pages were like an old radio hit "chart," these cabinets would be the "fast mover." I'm surprised, considering it was an after thought to even post these after years of building them.
