Project Information

Here is yet another venture into my box making and having a blast, this is from a batch of wood that I just recently came across, my dad's next door neighbor had this tree (Texas Cedar Elm) on his property that had been dead standing for a good two years and he just brought it down a few months ago, I was fortunate to come across this find more so that I didn't have to use my chainsaw it was already portioned for me, I've had it stickered for a good while and tested it at 15% before bringing it into my shop in which I let it sit for about a week for adjustment, I optioned for a live edge lid along with custom made wooden hinges to compliment the live edge also making them to look the part, The box joints are 1/2" another trial, I wanted to see what they looked like. This box measures 12" x 7 1/2" x 5", it's finished in a single coat of tung oil, two coats of wipe on poly and a final coat of paste wax.

Thanks for looking and comments are always enjoyed.

Hey Blackie,
I have about 6 cedar elms I'm bringing down as soon as the weather settles a bit.
I'm going to save 4 or 5 logs for my own use, and cut the rest up for the burn pile unless you or someone else wants some… Come up and get it after it's cut.

Dallas, right now I've got a good stock pile of it, but…. depending on your time line and when you bring them down I may be interested, please keep me posted.

Thanks for the great comments everyone.

Probably sometime late this fall or early spring. If I have time I will slab it at 8/4 and stack it under cover., that just depends on my 'want-to.'
I also have a couple of white oaks that have to be brought down, along with a new Texas Cedar that had ever limb stripped off of it when an overhanging Live Oak limb got eaten by carpenter ants and broke off.

All will have to go on the burn pile as I can't handle that much for slabbing on the chainsaw mill.

The homemade hinges are a good idea. I may steal it sometime. Nice work.

Todd thanks, most of my latest boxes have wooden hinges, there's many other members on here that make them, that's how I got into it by others and asking questions along with google and youtube, you should, they are fun and easy to make there are so many different patterns and avenues to take in making them, I found mine by way of using my box joint jig.

Another nice build. Hinges turned out very well. And I love that 'feathery' grain that elm has.
Now try some 1/4" box joints. And then some 1/8" box joints. The 1/8"ers are more of a challenge but REALLY cool looking (especially with strongly contrasting woods).

Thanks Andy, I can go down to 1/4" as my jig allows that but… not 1/8" I'd have to make a separate jig for that but sound challenging, I'll put that on my to do list thanks.
