Project Information

I made this coffee table for myself, the old coffee table I had is now a stand for my turtle tank. I have been looking for a good excuse to make a nice "fun" project for a while now and I wanted to make something with no mechanical fasteners because its been a while since I got to do something like that as well. I used mortise and tennion, dovetails, dowels and biscuits. The materials are maple for the frame and walnut for the top, I had everything in the shop from previous jobs. I did stain the top american walnut to bring out a more even tone, I used up all the 6/4 walnut I had and some of it was a bit too blond for my liking. I also decided to go with a "floating top" design, I have been looking for a job to try this on for a while now, I think its a neat look. thanks for looking!

Chris,
I really like the floating top appearance and the dovetailed cross members!

That Walnut top turned out beautifully, too.

Great Chris, as usual. There is something different about making things for yourself, you get to see it every day.

That is truly an awesome table! Well done sir!

You mentioned that you stained the walnut top, what is the rest of it finished with? Coffee table is something on my list too but I've been curious about making a durable natural finish.. Thanks!

beautiful table chris, its got that nice modern look , i think you need to let me come and add some rustic to it…lol..this will be great to look at all the time knowing you made it, as time goes by and you need more furniture, you can make it all…enjoy it.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

7Footer, the top is stained with three coats of lacquer and the frame is just three coats of lacquer. If the walnut I had was a more even colour i wouldn't have stained it.

Grizz, shop door is always open! However if you add too much rustic… well, I'm sure you can refinish right? haha

Wonderful design and execution! (could have used a few nails to spice it up, though)
