Project Information

Here is my second attempt at a cutting board. I haven't posted my first one yet since I didn't get any good pictures of it before I gave it away. This board is made of Hard Maple and Mahogany. I had a lot of fun making this board. The dimensions were supposed to be a little different and it was originally going to be more of a checked pattern, but as I was cutting up my maple stocks, I had a huge, thick knot right in the middle of one of the strips. So, I had to modify my pattern and this is what I came up with.

I got the opportunity to use my inherited #3 Smoothing Plane on this project to flatten the top. The plane wasn't perfectly setup and not very sharp, but it made this board soooooo much easier to flatten than the first. I had to go out and pickup a slightly nicer #5 Jack Plane from eBay. I'll be posting the rehab of that here shortly.

I used the big box butcher block oil (which I think is just overpriced mineral oil). However, I couldn't figure out why the centers of the maple blocks kept the dark spots. I let the board dry out in the house and elevated on blocks for several days just in case I over-saturated the board, but nothing changed. Anyone had this problem before?

Hey Rob! I used my router for the cutouts on the bottom, a la Woodwhisperer style. I had a few stop blocks to create the outer boundaries. I saw a few other methods for grips that I'll prolly try in the future.

My guess is the whiter edges on the maple are from glue squeeze out. All of the maple would have darkened up if the glue wasn't repelling the mineral oil. Great Looking Board Overall!!! Keep it up
