Obvious keeper. There are those that actually would like the oops on it. And if that doesn't work, do what I do. Give it to a family member. They never get the good stuff :)

Without a doubt a keeper. I honestly dont think anyone would ever suggst that your screwed up on it while carving. It looks very intentional to me. Keep up the work Joey.

First, that's a beautiful box, Joey. The projects with that kind of "boo-boo" are the ones I get to keep out of my shop. I don't give mistakes away, and unfortunately I don't have an outlet to sell anything.

You could use this as an opportunity to add another element to the work, like inlaid turquoise pieces, etc. Someone with your great artistic ability should be able to make this one another touchdown.

Again-good job!

I say keep it. It looks just fine to me…and besides, you could give it some cool name like the "crippled cross".
Anyone would be glad to have it.

I agree with Granddaddy1. I could never give away something I made that had an obvious flaw on it. I have made my share of them and when I know their is a mistake on a piece, I can seldom even keep it for myself. That may be partly why I have a wood stove in my shop. It is just a learning process for me.

Your boxes do rock and roll…......................

Tell everyone you did it on purpose ….that it was the artist coming out in you! They will believe it and ….........you can add 100.00 to it's value! LOL

Great job all the way around on this. Love it!

Artistic license…..not an oops! I really like the way the cross is interrupted by the sculpted surface.

weighing the fact that the box is nicer than any I can make, the inlay is silky as heck and the carving is smooth. I'd keep it. but I'm thinking your question was rhetorical :)

That's a nice piece of work right there!

About 15 years ago in our church we were doing an Easter special and part of it was to invite folks up and let them dip into a bowl of glass "rocks" that also had water covering the rocks. It was for them to keep in their pocket so everytime they felt the rock, they'd be reminded of the rocks that were washed smooth by the water in the river that Jesus was baptized in.

As people came up and chose their rock they started trying to lok thru for one that didnt have cracks or crevices in it (they wanted a "perfect" rock to keep)

When my turn came I went up and pulled one out that was almost cracked in half and the Deacon next to me saw it and said "You might want another one Joe, that one has a pretty big flaw in it."

My reply… "S'ok Tom, This rock is perfect for me. This rock has some pretty big flaws, just like I do."

I say that box is just perfect! Dont scrap it!

Joey, You gotta be kidding me! That is a beautiful box and no one would have even noticed the "oops" if you hadn't pointed it out. I think you did a beautiful job with some amazing woods.

Well after reading what you all wrote and taking my wife's opinion into account, I decided to offer it on my facebook page for $100. The strengths of a artist and a craftsman, is not that he doesn't make mistakes, it that he make them look good when they happen. I thought about grinding away the cross and just have a wavy lacewood box, and no would would ever know except for me. Now I accept my mistakes, I have do the best to my ability to make my mistake work within the project itself. For ultimately it's up to the box and wood. The wood is telling me that it is done. If I felt any differently about it, the inlay would be gone. Every single thing in life I do, I have mistakes in. All I can try to do is to make the next one better than the last one. This one is better in many ways and one of those ways is the scars that got it to this point. I am proud of this box and will call "lack of faith" For those who judge because of the outer skin, and never seeing the depth of faith that is held within, I like it, I will consider it a test in myself and others. And if no one buys it, I will have to find a place to keep it,

Joey, some of my best discoveries have been accidents. I think I might actually like this top more if the cross were cut through in a couple more places. I'll have to think about this more. Keep boxing and keep posting.

It's a keeper! Especially with all the work you put in it. The carvings remind me of waves of water going over the top and one wave is bending the light over the cross so you can't see it, an optical illusion. And I think $100 is way to small an asking price, you should ask double, or even triple.
