Project Information

Well I am on a roll here so will flood LJ with my little projects

This is a mallet that I had help with from LJ'ess Autumn, who made a lovely LV mallet here
http://lumberjocks.com/projects/40271
I was thinking of ebony as a head, but Autumn wrote me and suggested that it would be too brittle and prone to breakage/chipping. So, she suggested I use a tight grained fruit wood and offered some apricot wood to me. How cool is that of her. Thanks again for that offer Autumn, wonderful gesture to a complete stranger!
I just so happened to have a little pear wood in the garage so with her consent off I went into my exotics cut off box (ordered online for $15) to get some accompanying wood.
I am going to have to go look up what all the woods were:
Pear cheeks and face for sure
Jatoba handle ?
Morado wedges?
Something else in the middle?
That is the problem with off cuts as you are never sure, but also the fun part as you get to try out new weird woods and hone the old ID skills.
I like to draw and research a project out so the last pic is my rough plans from my project journal. I looked at a lot of LJ'ers mallets…. shape, size, materials before falling into this one design of my own.
Thanks for looking
Cheers, Scott

I like the way you put that mallet together. I always think of boring a hole but this is better.

A good looking mallet and a great story to go with it.

Today my wife, who never goes near my workbench, decided that this mallet was perfect to drive in wooden stakes that support the trellis in her garden.
Thanks honey….geese

That's a beautiful tool. How does the rectangular section handle feel after extended use?

Sorry, I didn't see your question earlier.
The handle is ok, I have actually beveled the corners where I hold it. But it is really a for show mallet used sparingly.
An old school chum did some lathe work this summer with my kids and I. He made a great round mallet and I put soft pig skin and a deer lacing so it looks like a zebra handle…that one is comfy!
I will see if I can get a picture
